It’s hard to keep up with the shifts in language and associated clinical practice changes the anti-abortion movements is throwing around these days. As I start to create a list to then work into a bigger ethics piece planning to eviscerate the clinical community for standing idly by, here’s what I have so far. Each is its own subtle or obvious attempt to move away from the pregnant person’s agency and right to autonomy for their own body instead toward personification of fertilized eggs, embryos, and fetuses at the expense of the dehumanization of the pregnant person. Please share any additions in the comments. Many are culled from Jessica Valenti’s fantastic newsletter “Abortion Everyday,” which I highly recommend.
Eliminating genetic testing for fatal fetal and neonatal anomalies, while working toward removing abortion access for these diagnoses.
Away from “abortifacient” and toward “embryocidal” or “embryotoxic.”
From “life-saving abortion” to “medically-indicated maternal fetal separation.” WHAT. I ask again, WHAT?!? (this and endless other horrific terms suggested here)
