When I travel to Saint Louis for my required once-monthly presence on campus, I stay with my grandparents who live about 30min from campus. My grandfather is in kidney failure after decades of heart medication (and after a quintuple bypass in his 40s), and has been on home dialysis for a few years. This week is the first I’ve managed his dialysis on my own, as my step-grandmother needed to visit another sick family member this weekend. I’ve helped to carry and unpack the bags and tubes before, but have never done the set-up on my own from start to finish. She showed me how to prep the infusions and run his dialysis machine before she left.
